In the state of Iran, prison authorities have blocked Narges Mohammadi, who is a Nobel Peace Prize winner, from her hospital care after she refused to wear a hijab. Ms. Mohammadi, who is 51 years old, is being refused a transfer from Evin Prison for treatment of a heart condition. Her family is very worried about her health and that her life is at risk. Narges Mohammadi has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in October for her involvement in “fighting against the oppression of women in Iran.” A medical team has examined the woman and have found two veins with severe blockages and high lung pressure inside of Mohammadi. She is currently serving multiple sentences that amount to about 12 years in Tehran’s Evin prison and her Nobel prize came right around the time of the protests triggered by the death in custody of Mahsa Amini in September 2022 and the “murder” of a 17-year-old girl named Armita Garawand.

I find this article to be very interesting as it is talking about a woman who is fighting for the right of what young women and girls should wear in Iran. I find that it is wrong that Narges Mohammadi is not getting the preferred medical treatment because she is not wearing something on her head. This article is important because it helps to reminds us of violations of women and girls rights in Iran. Shortly after the Iranian Revolution in 1979, women have been required to wear hijabs when they are in a public area and not show their faces. These women and girls should be allowed to express themselves and show their faces.

This article is connected to International Relations since we have learned about human rights. In September 2022, a young woman named Mahma Amini was arrested and severely beaten of Iranian police for not wearing her hijab correctly, which resulted in her death. Her death sparked a lot of protests fighting for the rights of women and girls in Iran. We have also discussed critical junctions, which are historical events that have shifted how the countries around the world operate today. The Iranian Revolution was around the time of the Cold War, which has left severe impacts on how the country of Iran functions today.
