In hopes to increase the volume of trade to greater than $1 billion, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have signed bilateral agreements to raise commercial and economic cooperation between the two countries. Turkish President Erdogan traveled to Abuja, Nigeria (the capital of Nigeria) to converse with Buhari. The Nigerian Leader said that he and Erdogan have discussed ways to strengthen the relationship between the two countries by solving a number of bilateral issues. President Erdogan has emphasized the importance of strengthening Turkey and Nigeria’s relations and that Turkey is ready to team up with Nigeria to solve problems regarding security and other bilateral issues.

Turkish-Nigerian relations have always been on good terms. Trade between these two countries goes back centuries, long before the foundations of the present states of the Republic of Turkey and of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Not only has trade brought the two countries together, but also a political-military alliance that was formed in the sixteenth century against third parties. Each country’s stability is vital for the stability of their regions. Inevitably, due to their position as regional powers they also face similar foreign policy tactics and pressures in the international arena. Naturally, because of these similarities, it has helped pave a way for common understanding and sharing of experience between the two countries.

How this relates to class is that this could either represent a reciprocity view of International Relations. The Reciprocity view of International Relations is when one contributes to a group but is rewarded for certain behavior, unless interests become self orientated at the expense of the group. Turkey has a lot to benefit from Turkey-Nigeria relations. If Turkey is able to maximize the gains from Turkish-Nigerian relations, it would provide the necessary guidelines for the development of Turkey’s relations with the rest of Africa. It would still fall under the Reciprocity view because Turkey would still be helping Nigeria with their issues and Nigeria helping Turkey with theirs.
