Nigerian Court Drops Charges Against Biafra Leader Nnamdi Kanu

A court in Nigeria annulled charges of treason, terrorism, and possession of illegal weapons, against the Separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu, they declared his arrest to be unlawful. The court decided that a lower court where the trial had begun had no jurisdiction to try him. Kanu had been unlawfully removed from Kenya, however, the government has stated that they want to pursue the case further since he was only discharged and not acquitted. Kenya denied any involvement in the Kanu case, his arrest, or with his group the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). IPOB is lobbying for a breakaway state in the Southeast of the country, Nigeria is obviously opposed to this. The UK government of which Kanu is a citizen asked Nigeria to confirm where and when they arrested Kanu, they refused to answer.

Nigeria doesn’t seem to have any right to take Kanu from another sovereign state. I think if the allegations against him are true then I believe what they’ve done isn’t nearly as bad as Kenya or the UK is making it out to be, but I doubt that what he’s being tried for he really did. What I think is significantly more likely is that Kenya decided to either arrest Kanu for Nigeria or allow Nigeria to arrest him themselves, the reason they would do this is so the UK who is one of their close allies wouldn’t be upset with them for allowing one of their citizens to be unlawfully arrested.

As much as this is a story about Nigeria I feel like it is more about Kenya. My theory is that Kenya helped Nigeria arrest Kanu and is now denying their involvement. Kenya is dealing with the collective goods issue. Kenya has positive relations with both the UK and Nigeria and flat out admitting they helped Nigeria arrest Kanu would harm their relations with the UK, however, not helping Nigeria arrest Kanu could have harmed relations with Nigeria. Currently the solution they have is to lie publicly about their relation to the arrest of Kanu to the UK while privately assisting Nigeria. This pleases the Nigerian Government and the UK believes that Kenya had nothing to do with it so their relations are unharmed. This does set a poor precedent for the treatment of UK citizens outside of the country so somebody in this deal is getting a poor outcome.
