On March 7th the U. N. human rights chief called on Daniel Ortega who is the president of Nicaragua to start conducting fair elections again. Michelle Bachelet called on Ortega for a credible, fair, and transparent electoral process. Bachelet wants to see the elections be inclusive of all views and stop punishing people for having opposing views. In the past four people vouching for better human rights were wrongfully detained in Nicaragua. Nicaragua’s response to Bachelet basically denied any wrongdoing saying that reports of Human rights abuse were extremely biased and created to interfere with Nicaragua international affairs. Bachelet also said that over three hundred protesters were killed by government forces in Nicaragua in the past.

This article is important because it shows that the United Nations is doing what they can do to try and limit human rights abusers and make Nicaragua a fair and just nation. In my opinion it is messed up that countries commit these terrible acts and because states are sovereign there are limited actions that the United Nations can do. I do not know much about Nicaragua and the resources they have so I am not really sure what sanctions can be imposed on them.

The United Nations is the closest we will get to having essentially a world government. This relates to what we have been talking about in class because recently we have been learning about the roles of the United Nations. I am sure that if these Human rights conflicts get bad enough the United Nations will intervene further and get groups within them more involved to put an end to the abuse. With all of that said when rubber meets road there is no saying what Nicaragua will do. Nicaragua is a sovereign state so they do not have to follow exactly what the United Nations says.
