The east African neighbors Somalia and Kenya are in dispute over 30,000 nautical miles of the resource rich Indian ocean. The two countries disagree on the location of the boundary in the area where their maritime entitlements overlap, according to court records. This area is a livelihood for thousands of Kenyans and is a major prospect for oil and gas deposits. Kenya believes that some of the world powers are meddling with the court in correspondence with Somalia. The reason that world powers may be doing this is because Somalia will most likely sell the vast majority of gas and oil at a much lower price then Kenya. The international court of Justice will announce their decision on October 12,2021. The development is expected to have far-reaching consequences on the use of Indian Ocean waters, claimed by the two nations.
This is a major dispute because of the vast amounts of oil and gas that could come from these waters. In fact, it may involve some of the world powers to get control of the sheer amount. If Kenya ends up owning a majority of the land they will most likely sell the oil and gas at much higher prices than Somalia. In turn, world powers will, in their best interest, try to make it so Somalia owns most of the land. Whoever ends up getting their hands on the land will most definitely become a much more profitable country.
This connects to class because if these countries did not coerce the way that they did it could have potentially created a major conflict. Also the International Court of Justice is a part of the United Nations. The United Nations is the largest IGO in the world that involves itself in the world’s politics and economics. The International Court of Justice is an example of how the United Nations helps to handle political disputes. It enforces international law and helps to resolve major conflicts.
